The Dangerous Reality
The Dangerous Reality
Driver education is incredibly significant in reducing the number of deaths and injuries related to driving. Young drivers are more at risk in regards to car accidents because of their inexperience. I think the two biggest causes of car accidents are drunk driving and looking at cell phones while driving. Although I think driving education is important, sometimes it can be ineffective. This is because many young adults often have a short amount of time that they can stay focused and I think many people don’t take driver education seriously. This wasn’t the case for me because I know how dangerous driving can be and when I was first learning I wanted to make sure that when I got on the road I would be as safe as possible. Fortunately because I was attentive in my driver education and my parents taught me well, I have never been in a car crash. However, within this past school year 2 families from my school have suffered losses due to drunk driving. Three kids in total from my high school community were killed because of drunk drivers. I truly believe that is the biggest cause of car crashes and car deaths. I think one way to solve this is to spread awareness to people about the dangers of drunk driving. In particular to young people so they understand these consequences at an early age and hopefully never take part in this. Another main cause of crashes is texting while driving or getting distracted by your phone. As a young driver I can admit that it can be distracting and tempting when you hear a notification sound or see something pop up on your phone, however I have learned how to control this. If you have an iphone it is very simple, all you do is turn on do not disturb, that way you won’t see any notifications until after you are safely stopped at your destination. Another significant issue that causes car accidents is speeding and racing. Especially for younger drivers who think they are invincible, racing is unfortunately something that is very common. A boy at my school decided to race a friend while driving late at night and he ran a red light in order to “win” their race and got into a horrific accident. Many young adults are very nonchalant about driving and following the rules of the road, when in reality those rules are going to save lives. People need to talk about the dangers of driving more often so young adults know the possible consequences.
