Buckle Up

Driving can be an intimidating task. As soon as you sit in that driver’s seat, a huge responsibility is put upon you. You are about to be in control of a 3000-pound metal machine soaring up to eighty miles per hour. If that doesn’t sound intimidating to you, I don’t know what would.

Obviously, before sitting in the driver’s seat, there are things you should do: like taking Driver’s Education classes or getting your permit/license. Unfortunately, not all drivers complete those requirements. Some teens are so desperate for that freedom, that they are willing to endanger themselves or others for a joyride. Those requirements such as Drivers’ Education are extremely important in keeping drivers safe. I learned valuable information there such as how to stay focused while behind the wheel. We watched impactful videos that showed what happened if safe driving was not taken seriously. The drivers in the videos were either distracted or unworried about certain safety precautions. These drivers risked their lives and the lives around them.

Within class, we were taught a lot about distracted driving, which is a huge issue today because of phones. Texting and driving caused 3,500 deaths and up to 391,000 injuries in 2019 alone. These statistics were shared, making students like myself realize the importance. This information was taken to heart by myself and my fellow classmates. My class learned the importance of seatbelts and driving awareness. Knowing this valuable information saves thousands of lives as new drivers buckle up and hit the roads.

There are some very important steps to take in order to reduce the number of driving-related deaths. First, drive within your allowed restrictions. If you have your permit, don’t drive without a parent or experienced adult. This is a step you take before even getting in a car. If you have a provisional license, don’t drive your friends until you are legally allowed to. Always wear a seatbelt. This is one of the simplest things you can do to protect yourself. Also, always follow the speed limit. Limits are established for a reason and should always be followed. Remain attentive and never drive while under the influence of alcohol and other substances. Take the time to call a friend for a ride instead of endangering yourself and others by driving under the influence. It is also important to limit all distractions. Put your phone in the glove box if you need to. Do whatever it takes to eliminate all distractions. Lastly, educate others and speak up if you see someone exhibiting unsafe driving habits. You could save a life.

A couple of years ago, my dad and younger brother were involved in a dangerous car accident. They were waiting at a red light and got hit by an incoming, distracted driver. That day was extremely eye-opening for my family and me. We knew that my dad and brother got lucky. They lived, but not everyone’s dad or brother does. Sometimes, family members don’t come home due to reckless driving. Don’t be that cause. Be safe and attentive because not everyone in car accidents get lucky. You don’t want to have to look someone in the eyes after killing someone they love on the road. Just remember, if you are responsible, that is something you shouldn’t have to experience.
