In the Blink of an Eye

In the Blink of an Eye

It is heartbreaking and unfathomable to see the horrifying number of deaths caused by driving. How is it possible that there have been more deaths from driving than from direct war combat? Fortunately, there is a solution to this dire problem, and it only involves simple awareness, learning, and obedience.

It would be amazing to say that increasing the amount of driver education would cause all fatalities from driving to cease. The sad reality is that we, as humans, are fallible and easily prone to mistakes. That’s just the way we were created since the beginning of time. No one is perfect, and therefore, there will continue to be accidents due to simple mistakes. However, we can take extra measures to keep teaching young drivers the proper steps, rules, and precautions needed to drive safely. If we do this, we will indeed see a reduction in the number of deaths from reckless driving. If we emphasize the dangers that come with driving while also balancing the benefits, drivers will be more aware and prepared when they go out into the world. Whether it’s choosing to drive past the speed limit or picking up your phone to reply to a text, these decisions can all be avoided if we really paid attention to our driver’s ed courses. Every life is precious, like a diamond or ruby, and it can be robbed from us in the blink of an eye. We need to teach our young drivers to value life like they would value the most valuable treasure.

I believe there should be a law requiring every new driver to take a drivers’ education course. It doesn’t matter their age. They could be 20 or 50 years old, yet they should be subject to take a course. This would not only provide for more experienced drivers, but it would be one more step in the direction to eliminating negligent driving. One way that we can keep ourselves and others safe on the road is to keep our phones out of sight while at the wheel. If it is out, we might be tempted to reach for it. Answering a text or phone call is not worth the risk of getting in a crash, which could involve our own injuries or even death, not to mention the endangerment of others involved. It’s not worth robbing the life of someone else’s brother, sister, mother, or father. Another way we can avoid driving accidents is to stay away from drugs and alcohol. Although it aligns with my moral standards, I cannot force everyone to abstain from these all the time, but I would encourage everyone to at least not take drugs or drink alcohol whenever they know they will be driving.

It is a privilege to be able to drive a car on the road. Not everyone has access to a car or the means to take a drivers’ license test. Because of this, we should not take our driving privileges for granted. We should always be proactive and ready for anything that could happen in split seconds. The world will be a better place if we always follow the rules and look out for our own safety as well as the safety of others on the road.
