In the Driver’s Seat

In the Driver’s Seat

My name is Erin Martinez and I was involved in a head on collision a year ago. A close friend of mine and I were hit by a drunk driver at 90 mph when he crossed over the double yellow lines. My life changed that day for many reasons, but now I deeply understand the consequences of driving recklessly. I want to share my story with others so I can spread awareness for drunk driving and speak about how much of an impact driver education can have on new drivers.

I am beyond grateful I went through Driver’s Education and encourage any new drivers to go through the course. Statistically, younger drivers are likelier to get into car crashes because they lack experience. The program teaches new drivers about the responsibility that they have on the road and provides them with the skills to accomplish that.

The first step that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving is making sure you are capable to drive. That could mean making sure you haven’t been drinking, that you are well rested, and emotionally stable. Without doing this, driving under any of these conditions is unsafe for you, your passengers, and other drivers. Once you are in the driver seat, it’s important to fasten your seatbelt. My car accident showed me that a seatbelt can really save someone’s life because my injuries could have been a lot worse if I wasn’t wearing one. Further steps to take are obeying all traffic laws, continually check your surroundings and mirrors, and to limit distractions while driving.

To be a better and safer driver, you have to be mindful of other drivers and yourself before getting behind the wheel. You can help others become safer on road by encouraging safe driving. If your friends or family try to drive under the influence, tired, or not in the right headspace, their safety should be a priority. Taking these steps can save your life and someone else’s.
