Driver Education Initiative Award: In the Driver’s Seat

“Leave sooner. Drive Slower. Live Longer.” (Anonymous) This quote resembles the need for driver education in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving. The steps for the education of modern-day drivers that can be taken are to have more awareness of pedestrian safety, more hours required for new drivers, and no text and drive laws in every state. These steps can prevent the deaths of pedestrians as they walk across the roads, the more hours can help new drivers to get more comfortable and confident on the road before driving on their own, and the laws for texting and driving with keep drivers focused on the road and less on their phones. I have, fortunately, never been in a car accident, however, my family has been affected by irresponsible drivers. Around six million families are affected every year due to car crashes in the United States alone. I never want to affect any family due to irresponsible driving. To avoid this, I will take the steps of making sure to stay off my phone when driving, getting enough sleep before driving, and encourage other drives to do the same.
