The Destruction of Devices
When many people think about drivers education, they believe that it is a waste of money and time. From personal experience, being the first person to drive out of me and my three other siblings, I would not have been able to learn directly just from my parents teaching me how to drive. Seeing how many bad habits my parents have and how irresponsible people around me drive is unsettling. These are people I would not like to learn from. Also, drivers education instructors are constantly being updated with the new rules of the road as well as have to be certified to teach. These people have a job to make sure people do not make mistakes that will harm others and will also give a non- biased opinion about one’s driving.
The importance of drivers education when it comes to reducing deaths is about not teaching us bad habits that can be developed as we drive. I can see many bad habits that I have developed over the past year and a half of driving that could potentially put myself and others into danger. However, drivers education has taught me how to fall out of these habits and how to not create new ones. The steps we can take as drivers to help save others is by putting our phones away. If we put down our screens and focus on the road, we can fully be aware of our surroundings and not accidentally hit a car or another person. This year at my university, one of our professors was in a car accident herself. She was not driving behind the wheel, she was crossing the street and was hit by a car. The sad part was that the driver was on their phone during the accident and took the life of the professor.
Just knowing a device that we have on us that makes us feel safe is causing even greater damage to those who are on the road. The way I can help better my driving as well as others, is by encouraging others to put their phones down as well as setting an example by putting mine away. Drivers education instructors put into our heads that our phones should be put away and on silent when we are driving due to them taking our attention away from the road. One thing I remember learning in drivers education is to expect the unexpected. How can one do so when they are looking at their phone trying to send a text? Phones are a new way to the future, but they cause a future with more road accidents.
