Keep Your Eyes on the Road and Drive On!
Driving has become essential in our everyday life. It helps us commute to work and travel out of state to enjoy a wonderful vacation! The luxury of driving is like nothing else, but of course, that can all be disrupted with reckless driving. A precious life can vanish in the blink of an eye as a result of a car crash and can leave a family devastated. Luckily, there are ways to prevent this from happening to anyone.
Research has shown that the crashes and the fatality rate are the highest amongst teens ages 16-18. Driving has become a crucial skill that must be taught to teens. Driving courses can either be taken online or in person. Regardless, driver education courses provide insightful information about what goes on in the driving world. Taking my first driving course was both nerve-wracking and exciting! “Buckle your seat belts!”, “Don’t text and drive!”, “Look both ways!”, “Remember to signal before turning!”, and “Pay attention to the road signs!” were just some of the tips that our coaches continuously yelled out at us when we operated the vehicles. The skills that I learned while taking my first driver’s education course will stick with me for a lifetime. These courses are designed to prepare students for unexpected scenarios that happen regularly on the road or highway, which is important in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving.
In order to reduce the number of deaths related to driving, we need to first educate our students. Back in my driver’s education class, the students were astonished at how texting and driving could actually result in such fatal car crashes that took the life of so many innocent people. Having safety patrols talk to us about the dangers of driving brought us to the realization that driving is no joke! The stories of those who have been convicted of texting while driving showed how their reckless decisions caused them to lose everything and end up in jail.
Luckily, I have not had the experience of being in a car accident but there were many moments where I was close to getting hit by another car. Someone looking at their phone for a quick second can cause them to lose control of steering. I’ve seen this a few times when I was in the passenger seat and saw that the driver next to us almost bump into us simply because they’re not keeping their eyes on the road.
There are many steps that can be taken to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road. For one, it’s best to keep your phone on Do Not Disturb because some people find it tempting to check their phone once they get a notification. Another solution is to keep your phone away from reach. Taking these steps will not only keep you safe, but it also prevents you from crashing and hurting someone else.
