It Was Just One Text
Imagine for a second, it was just one text, just saying “okay.” Now you are surrounded by smoke and your car is upside down. You can hear sirens, and the feel piercing pain coming from your head. With blurry vision, you can see the blue and white of police cars and the red of fire trucks. You can’t move, and you pass out. The next time you open your eyes, you’re in the back of an ambulance. It was just one text.
Distracted driving takes the lives of thousands of people every year. Looking away from the road for even just a fraction of a second to switch radio stations puts everyone on the road at risk. First year drivers should educate themselves on the dangers of distracted driving, because they are very real. Everyone says “this will not happen to me” until it does happen to them. These dangers do not go away until you stop driving. Drivers education allows students to see the statistics and allow them to make conscious decisions for safer transportation.
While in the year and a half that I have had my drivers license, I have been incredibly fortunate to not get into a wreck. Although I have had friends wreck. I have also seen family members texting while driving. Everytime I see this, my mind immediately goes to the scenes in movies, it would take less than a second to crash. The only thing as a passenger that I can do is to continue to educate others on the importance of safe driving. Because it only takes one text for someone’s life to end.
