The Importance of the Rules of the Road
Every day, millions of people are dying due to car accidents. The risk of driving has always been high, but it seems as if the risk is increasing as the years pass by. There are driver’s ed classes and different tests in order to get your driver’s license for a reason. People need to be educated about the rules on the road otherwise bad things come out of it. More teens are dying in car accidents because they are distracted on their phones or they are driving recklessly. The sad truth is that even adults are driving while being distracted on their phones. How can kids learn if their parents do not? That is why we have so many driving educational training classes and books to educated new drivers.
Driver’s Ed may be tedious, but it teaches a new driver all the knowledge needed to drive safely on the roads. The program will continuously quiz you and show examples to make sure the driver understands what they are saying. The driver’s manual lets drivers have an insight into the rules of the road as well and does a very good job as well. These manuals and educational classes teach drivers how to avoid accidents and vividly explains how to. They explain why you should always look at your blind spots before changing lanes because it could cause accidents and how to turn perfectly without flipping the car over. Many parts of the book may be common sense, but it will surprise you when you see how much some people did not know. Driver’s Ed also allows you to explore more options if you are in an emergency and you have to go on your phone. They allow you to have options and stay safe on the road for yourself and others.
I was once in a very bad car accident in 2016. It was snowing a lot here and the roads were icy but I had to go to school. My mom was driving and all of a sudden our car started slipping and moving in its own direction. My mom panicked and did not know what to do so she tried to move the steering wheel and the car spun until it hit the railing, rolled into a ditched, and landed upside down. My mom and I tried to get out of the car but my side of the door was shut closed by rocks but luckily my mom’s door was able to open. Once we both got out of the car, we called 911 and waited for the police to come. It was so scary and so dangerous, but luckily my mom and I did not even get a scratch. Once I turned 15 ½ I started reading the driver’s manual and it actually stated what to do in the situation we were in. The biggest point was to stay calm and make no sudden movements. I learned such a critical lesson by reading only one page of the manual, so imagine how much valuable information is in the rest of the booklet.
In order to reduce the number of deaths, the steps taken depend all on the individual. There are already laws against being on your phone in the car and against any type of distractions, but people still fail to follow those laws. If the individual follows the rules, then that ensures that one less person is driving recklessly out there. As an individual who drives, I can always be extra careful before making right turns and be more patients on the road. I can wait for a car to pass me before I take a turn or I can drive the speed limit to ensure that I am following the rules and not hurting anyone. I am always checking my blind spots before changing lanes and taking turns. There is so much responsibility for the individual and it was given to them the minute they passed their driver’s test. Driving is a privilege and we cannot take it for granted, we need to take control and be responsible.
