The Pros to Safe Driving

About 1.35 million people die each year from car accidents because they weren’t following safe practices. Being a safe driver means being alert at all times and never taking your eyes off the road. It also means to be prepared for anything that could happen when driving. Safe driver education is important because the more people that know about safe driving, the fewer accidents there will be. As a result, fewer accidents equals a lower death rate.

There are a few steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths while driving. According to the National Safety Council, cell phones cause about 390,000 injuries from crashes each year and an average of 4,000 deaths. One of these steps is putting away your cell phone so you can’t see it or be tempted to use it. An average of 37,133 people were killed in vehicle crashes because they were not wearing a seatbelt. This fact proves that a simple step to reducing deaths is wearing a seatbelt. In 2018, 10,511 people died from driving while under the influence. So a third step for safe driving is to not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2017, speeding was a cause of 26% of the deaths, which is 351,000 people out of the 1.35 million. Therefore, a final step to help reduce deaths is to obey traffic and speed laws. If people follow these safety steps then fewer accidents would occur and the death rate would be lower. We wouldn’t be losing 1.35 million people, who are friends, family, significant others, and loved ones.

I have never been in an accident, and don’t want to be! However, I do have friends who don’t practice safe driving and have gotten into an accident. My friends will drive while on the phone, either texting or scrolling through social media. I have friends who speed. Then I also have some who vape, while driving, which distracts them. I can become a better driver by obeying the laws of the road, by always making sure I wear my seat belt, and by never looking at my phone while I drive. Then I use my knowledge of safe driving and tell my friends what they should do to keep themselves and others safe while driving. For example, when I am in the car with my friends, I would remind them to keep their phone away and to watch their speed, when driving.

Overall, having a driver education can reduce car crashes and reduce deaths among people. Just think if everyone followed safe driving, then our loved ones, friends, and family, would still be with us. So together let’s get those 1.35 million deaths down to 0, by knowing and practicing safe driving.
