Generational drving.
Driver education is of the utmost importance and should be enforced more within our society, especially towards young drivers. During my high school years, I have seen many of my friends get into car accidents, and the fault belonged to most of them. It is a known fact that teenagers get into several accidents as they begin to drive on their own due to lack of experience. It is imperative that we, as a society, take steps in order to reduce the number of deaths that happen on the road.
Nowadays, driver courses are given online, and it only provides the information required to obtain a learner’s permit. It can easily be manipulated and cheated on from home, so the student really is not learning how to conduct safe driving. Then it is up to the parent or guardian of that child to teach them the mechanics of defensive driving, but sometimes the parent or guardian doesn’t demonstrate proper or careful navigation, or they may not have the time to teach their child. The student then takes the test in order to obtain their license and they provide an exceptional display of driving skills. But what happens after they have received their license?
It is of the essence that the younger generation is properly taught how to drive defensively. Schools should provide a mandatory semester class where a professor teaches their students all the rules and regulations pertaining when it comes to effectively navigating the streets. They should have onsite driving practices, with the student’s parents’ approval. Adolescents must be educated and have a firm foundation from the beginning in order to instill good driving habits. Such as no texting while behind the wheel, or no driving under the influence.
Individually, we can take measures to make sure we are fit to be behind the wheel on the road. As a young driver myself, there are things that I could do to make sure that I keep myself safe and other individuals on the road. Before I begin driving, I can put my phone on vibrate or silent in order to prevent any distractions that will tempt me to take a glance at my phone. Also, if I need to be at a location, but notice I am drowsy, then I will find some other form of transportation because my focus and attentiveness will not be at full capacity. If I am in the passenger seat while someone else is the driver, it is my responsibility to be their extra pair of eyes to help prevent accidents in case the driver does not see a person or another vehicle on the path.
These are just a few of the ways that safe driving can be instilled currently. Even if it is not these steps, a stronger principle should be placed to ensure defensive driving. Everyone makes mistakes, but no one should pay the price with their life because of someone’s mistake.
