Put it in Drive

Put it in Drive

Today’s world seems like it travels at 90 mph, but that does not mean that is how we should drive. My name is Matson Nelson and I have been a licensed driver for a solid 14 months now. Prior to getting my license I learned to operate equipment on my family’s farm and the importance of safety. I will be honest when you are working there are always chores to get done and it is easy to get in a hurry but you have to constantly remind yourself to slow down and pay attention.

The same rule applies when operating a vehicle. I have a 35 minute drive to school each day and it can be rather frustrating when you get behind big trucks, school buses or other drivers who are taking their time, but always allowing yourself ample time to get where you are going is necessary. When you put your vehicle in drive you are unknowingly taking an oath that you are going to be as safe as possible and not put anyone’s safety in harm’s way. Vehicles are a huge part of deaths today and reckless driving accidents are growing in number. Today there are far more distractions to drivers than ever before, and it seems like everyone is in a hurry all the time.

Being a driver is a big responsibility but being a passenger is equally important. It is the responsibility of the passenger to hold the driver accountable and make sure that they are being responsible with how they drive, how alert they maybe and aware of any distractions as well. My younger sister is a routine passenger in my truck. With this being said I have a huge responsibility of a 12-year-old along with anyone on the highway. I have to always remember that no matter what is going on it is up to me to make sure I am doing everything I am suppose to for not only her safety but also being a positive role model for her as well. She is learning from how I drive, my attitude when being behind the wheel as well as any distractions that I can let interfere with my responsibilities.

Outside of school, I work at an Outpatient Physical Therapy clinic and have witnessed firsthand what motor vehicle and ATV accidents can do to people. This is not something that can always be prevented but by recognizing the importance and being aware of the risk involved it will help people to take it very seriously. Safe driving is not just about being safe when in the vehicle, but also being aware of your vehicle and keeping it safe regarding maintenance. Checking your tires and oil and ensuring that everything appears to be in good working condition is equally as important in trying to avoid danger.

I appreciate the opportunity to apply for this scholarship program and hope that people think about what it means to “Put it in Drive.” This is more than just a catchy saying, but a commitment to everyone you will meet up and down the highway.
