Save Lives and Follow Safety Rules
A few years ago my mother and I were involved in a horrendous car accident in a suburb outside of Chicago IL. My mother was turning at a yellow light at an intersection, and another person who was going through the light hit us on the passenger side of our vehicle. She was a young driver that was oblivious that we were turning and was using her cell phone. It felt unfair that we were the victims, my mother was obeying the traffic laws, was not on her phone and did not have any distractions, she was just trying to go to her destination. When the driver hit our car , my side of the vehicle was impacted the most, all the airbags were deployed and our car turned around facing oncoming traffic. Our car was completely totaled and was not in drivable condition. Thankfully we both had our seatbelts on or it could of have been a different ending.
Luckily we were able to walk away without any major injuries. It is so important that young drivers are careful and focused when it comes to driving. Cars are machines that can put lives at risk, so safety is key when one is behind the wheel of a vehicle. The importance of driver’s education is that the skills learned have to be practiced throughout one’s driving history, In class we are taught the basics of driving, and how to safely operate a vehicle on busy interstates, at night, and during other dangerous driving circumstances. Additionally teens should abide by the following steps to ensure their safety 1.) Prohibit the use of their phones while driving, 2. )Do not eat or drink while driving 3.) Do not have loud music playing that districts them from focusing on the road. 4.) Be aware and on the lookout for people that may be walking and not aware of their surroundings. I believe horrendous car accidents such as the one that I was involved in can be prevented but it requires young drivers such as myself to start paying more attention to the road and avoid distractions. Negligent actions not only impact the drivers but also their families and friends. It is so important to take drivers education and road safety seriously to save lives and prevent accidents, and enjoy our freedom of driving.
