Easy Steps to Safe Driving

Jennifer Silva

The importance of driving, specifically safe driving, is not discussed as much as it should. Often times, safe driving is considered to be a way to downplay or even limit a driver’s freedom. Yet, safety rules are not meant to restrict you. Safety is a set of agreements on preventing dangers. Driving is a silent mutual agreement between everyone that each driving rule will be followed. Driving is a sense of trust in other drivers and yourself. To become a safer and more reliable driver, a few steps must be accomplished.

The most important step to follow is to restrict as much interaction and focus placed on your phone. Too many accidents are a result of distracted driving. Even when checking that quick reply your mom sent you could be very dangerous. Stick to checking your phone before and after driving. If possible, you can ask a passenger to check your phone for you.

Another way to be a safe driver is to appropriately use your blinkers when necessary. Either when turning a different road, when changing lanes, or even turning on preventives, blinkers help everyone from surprises and sudden movement. Turning your blinkers ensures that other cars around you are aware of your next moves. Chances of collisions are then reduced. You’ll also come off as polite and curteous. No one likes being immediately cut off by someone. Especially if everyone is driving at 30 miles per hour.

To add on, make sure that all your lights are working to protect others and yourself from accidentally cutting someone off. Lights also assist you, other drivers, and passengers’ awareness of their surroundings in the dark. Not only will you keep other drivers and yourself safe, but also pedestrians along the sidewalk and crosswalks. Despite this, some lights can be too bright and blind incoming cars, creating a dangerous scenario and place both of you in risk of harm.

Finally, be aware of your speed at all times. Speeding may seem unavoidable or even seem such a small deal but they can be the difference between colliding and being inches apart from the car right in front of you. Make sure you are not going faster than other cars are. You won’t be able to stop as fast as the car in front of you if you speed. Plus, if it’s raining or snowing, drive much slower than the speed limit. Your wheels could suddenly slip on the rain and snow. The faster you’re going, less control you have over your car.

As you follow these steps, make sure you’re enjoying yourself as well. Driving can be terrifying and extremely dangerous at times but it’s also a fun and entertaining way to relax and discover new areas in your world. By following the safety steps, not only are you eeping yourself safe, you are also helping others stay safe as well. These steps are not here to limit your fun. Instead, they are here to help you stay safe and conscious while having fun. Driving isn’t a hassle, its a door to exploration.
