The Dangers of Driving and How You Can Avoid Them

Driver’s Education has taught both you and me, along with almost every driver on the road, the rules, laws and regulations of driving. Driver’s Education is one of the most important classes to be taken because, especially in today’s society, driving is almost unavoidable. So many things can be learned through Driver’s Ed classes, from the fundamentals of driving to how you could possibly avoid dangerous situations and save lives.

In my opinion, the most important thing about driving is that you are always focused and paying attention. This is why I believe that cell phones in the car are a HUGE distraction. I think there could be many steps taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving, but eliminating the use of phones would be a great way to make sure drivers are not sidetracked. This could be done by creating cars that do not start until the driver’s cell phone is stored away in a place where they can not be tempted to grab it.

As a new driver, I was in a car accident that scarred me from ever feeling the same about driving and or riding in cars. Luckily myself and all of my passengers, though some of us severely injured, survived. This incident was caused by a reckless driver, under the influence of drugs, swerving head on into my car. Being involved in any accident, let alone one that you have no control over, is very difficult to deal with. This is why driving under the influence and driving distracted are subjects I am very passionate about. One of the hardest things to comprehend is that as much as you are following the rules of the road and using what you learned in Driver’s Ed to keep yourself and others safe, there will always be careless people paying no mind to the safety of others on the road.

Though it would be impossible to end all driving errors and accidents, there are steps we as drivers can take to create safer roads. Making sure that you are completely focused on the road while you are driving is extremely important. Paying attention to your surroundings is a great way to spot possible danger and potentially avoid collisions and hazards in the street. You can also make sure you remind others of this. If you see a friend or family member trying to do something on their phone while behind the wheel, call them out. Though this could be an awkward confrontation, let them know that they are risking the safety of themselves and others. The same goes for driving under the influence. Make sure you are NEVER allowing someone that has consumed alcohol or drugs drive a vehicle. This is not only dangerous to them but to every other person around them. Holding ourselves and the people around us accountable for how we are driving is important to make sure that we are all staying safe while we get from place to place.
