Driving Safely

Jean Nathan Driving Safely

It is no secret that people die every day in car accidents caused by reckless driving. And it is no secret a lot of that percentage lies on teen driving. As a 17-year-old girl learning how to drive I understand the importance of experience, safety, and knowledge. Driver education is mandatory to give young drivers and reckless drivers the knowledge they need to drive safely and return home to their loved ones. Without driver education you fail to understand basic rules you think you already know. There are so many things we can do to reduce another death statistic in driving. No one wants to go out on the road on a mission to kill someone. We all know some people do drugs alcohol and if you do and you know you’re going to drive, why not wait? If someone knows that the designated driver is going to be intoxicated, they should stop the driver from driving at all costs or face a penalty if they are caught. It is always just the driver facing the penalty but everyone in that car had the means to stop him or her from driving.

One thing I never understood was texting and driving. I think all phone companies should create a method like the iPhone where it senses when you are driving. I believe all rivers should put their phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ so they wouldn’t be tempted to answer a text or so. We as humans spend hours on our phone in a day and it is truly sad that we can’t let our phone go for a short period of time. I think this method should fully lock you from receiving messages unless they are important. I believe that if people have things they need to answer and they have things like Bluetooth on their car, it would be a better option than risking yourself to pick up the phone. I just think that phones should all have safety regulations whether the phone is expensive or not because all lives matter on the road.

We can also reduce speeding. Although it looks like a little act, it can go a long way. Say you are speeding, and a car quickly changes lanes, it is hard to stop at that point. I have been in an accident and although it wasn’t a major one it scarred me. For a long time, I didn’t want to learn how to drive and that is the reason I still don’t have my license. One person’s mistake affects another person’s trauma. I know how I feel about my life and others on the road. I don’t ever want to live with the guilt of hurting someone. What I will do in my power to be a safe driver is make sure I am sober and awake. If I am tired, I wouldn’t risk falling asleep at the steering wheel because I thought I just had to drive. There is always another alternative when it comes to driving yourself if you are no capable and I think people need to learn that.
