Importance of Safe Driving

Importance of Safe Drivers

In 2019, there were 38,800 American deaths due to car crashes and collisions. This exceedingly high number is due to lack of driver’s education and safety on the roads. Driver’s education will provide teenagers the capabilities to safely maneuver traffic, and follow proper guidelines. More education and safety requirements are needed in the United States to protect our drivers and reduce this high amount of deaths.

Driver’s education is not a requirement in Arizona, and leaves our young drivers without the basic safety knowledge of how to operate the roads. Driver’s education is extremely important, because it can provide a vast amount of information to young drivers. Driver’s education teaches teenagers the basics of how to operate a car and how to maneuver through traffic, whether it is at night or on a busy freeway. This basic education can reduce the amount of mistakes made daily by these untrained drivers and reduce car crashes. Some steps that can be made to reduce the amount of driving-related deaths is by providing support and education to upcoming drivers. Making driver’s education mandatory would increase the amount of safer drivers put on the road. Another step that could be taken is to make the driving test in Arizona more difficult to promote young drivers to study and learn the rules before getting in a vehicle.

As a young driver myself, I have gotten into a few close calls with others, because of dumb mistakes. One of those mistakes was when I made a left hand turn. I was in the turning lane, but it was a blind spot due to a car on the other side of the road blocking me from seeing oncoming traffic. Instead of waiting for the green arrow, I tried to make the left and had to step on the gas to avoid a collision. This has made me realize that I need to take some steps in order to be safer on the road. Some steps I’ve taken to be a safer driver include: checking all my mirrors constantly, checking both ways consistently when making a turn, breaking early when coming to a stop, and having patience. Using these steps has made me become a much safer driver and I recommend them to others.

Going forward into the future, we need to make sure we provide a solid education to new drivers so that they can be safe on the roads. Driver’s education will provide more informational and professional training to teen drivers, resulting in less collisions and deaths.
