Driver Education Initiative Award: In the Driver’s Seat

Driver’s education is very important in helping students learn how to drive. Knowing more about driver’s education can help reduce the number of deaths by car crashes by informing drivers on what to do and not to do while operating a vehicle. It also allows students to receive practice driving while being supervised with a trained professional.

One step that can be taken in order to help reduce the number of deaths by driving is to not text and drive since that takes the eyes off the road and to always be vigilant while driving. Another step might be is to adjust all of your mirrors before you start driving. A third step is to decide what you want to listen to on the radio so that you are not having to take your eyes off the road to adjust the radio. Just because a specific person is following the rules of driving doesn’t mean everyone else is, and it is important to focus on the road, but be aware of other vehicles’ movements. Most importantly, do not make assumptions about what another vehicle (especially a large one) is going to do.

I was in a car crash because of this, and I ended up totaling my mom’s car. I was following a big truck and the truck pulled in the right lane and I thought he was going off the road on the left side and then as I went passed him, he turned right in the lane I was in and hit me. From then on, I started driving a little more slowly past where I crashed and always looked to see if anyone was coming in or out of the road.

There are several steps a person can take be a better and safer driver. One step is to follow the road signs; they are there for a reason. Drivers need to pay attending to the road and other vehicles around them and not be distracted by things such as texting, talking on the phone, messing with the radio, and anything else that distracts the driver from the road. If someone is in a car crash, check to see if there is damage. If both vehicles are not too damaged, then move them to the side of the road so traffic is not impeded and cars will not add to the wreck. Make sure no one is injured and then call 911 immediately. They are better equipped to handle the situation and assess the damage. These are all the tips I can provide for being safe on the road, and I hope you all stay safe out there.

I can follow the above steps to help become a better and safer driver along with making sure I am focused on the road and my surroundings. I can help others become safer on the road by making sure people I am riding with stay focused on the road and not distracted by their phone, radio, or other people in the car. I can also help with the event at school about safe driving that is presented to students to help them be aware of the dangers of driving distracted.
