Driver’s Education

Driver’s Education

One of the most important landmarks in a person’s life emerges in their teenage years: taking and passing their driver’s test. The nerves, the anticipation, the excitement when passing, and the freedom of driving by yourself for the first time are some of the many emotions that a teenager feels during the driver’s test process. Before taking the test, the driver’s education class must be completed. Driver’s education teaches about the importance of staying safe and providing examples of what could happen when safety measures are not followed. When I took driver’s education, the videos showed had an impact on me, as there were things that I never wanted to happen to myself or to anyone else. When teenagers first start driving, many of them remember the lessons learned from driver’s education and apply it to their driving. As they become more confident in their driving skills, some of those important lessons go down the drain. Texting, speeding, drunk driving, and others can come into play when a teenager becomes more confident. This happens in many adults too. All of the aforementioned and more leads to many deaths as a result of doing those things while driving or driving under the influence of something. Since driver’s education only has to be completed once, the lessons cannot be repeatdly shared and so their impact is not absorbed again. If the driver’s education class had to be completed more than once, for example, every 2 or 3 years or whenever a driver’s license needs to be renewed, then the impact that the class has would be absorbed over and over again. This would lead to people remembering the lessons and reminding themselves not to do anything that won’t keep everyone in the car safe. Since texting and driving lead to many car crashes and deaths, cell phones should have a setting where it recognizes that they are in a moving vehicle. The setting could put the phone on silent, so the driver does not hear any messages come through. Also, the phones could not allow any messages to be sent while the car is moving. However, phone calls and the phone feature should not be disabled for emergency purposes. I have seen friends and family driving irresponsibly, most of the time by speeding. They are in a hurry or have confidence in themselves and the car that they can go the speeds they want to, instead of the speeds that the road or area is set for. There is really no way to prevent people from speeding, as there are not enough policemen to enforce it. Cameras at locations can scan license plates and send tickets, but there is not enough money to go around to place cameras on every single road. I can help others and myself stay safe on the road by not speeding and making sure my phone is put away and on silent so I do not get distracted. I can make sure I follow all driving rules and pay attention to others around me. Driving is more dangerous than it seems and you cannot make it anymore safer, but you can take steps to try too.
