Driver’s Education
Driver’s education is a course someone can take to prepare them for driving on their own. Several schools don’t have the financials to keep this program going. It is a shame because several teens or young adults don’t get taught what to do behind the wheel or what not to do. I believe that if my high school had offered drivers education classes, most of the people I went to school with, including myself, wouldn’t have been in the accidents that they were. We would have learned what to do if we slid on ice, how to properly drive in the snow, the different intersections and what to do with them, And so much more. HARD- “Have you been drinking or using drugs?” “Are you too tired to drive?” “Remember to always buckle up.” “Don’t forget to put your phone down before taking off.” These are a must to know and think about before you get in a car and plan to drive somewhere, even if it’s less than a minute drive.
Careless, distracted, and impaired driving is the key reasons someone dies as a result of driving. In 2020, I was in two accidents. One was caused by weather; the other was me being uneducated on how a specific traffic light worked. I had to yield on a green light and wasn’t aware of that. This accident happened in June, almost six months later, I still don’t have a vehicle. My family member drive while drinking, texting, or sleeping sometimes. This scares me and makes me not want to ride with them, however, I’ve expressed my concerns to them. Most people don’t realize they have a problem, until it affects their lives in a big way. Most people don’t want help, until they realize they need it. It has to be on their terms. Some people have the ideal that it won’t happen to them. What they need to realize is a car accident can happen to anybody at any time. They want to make it home to their families, so why take the risk of someone else not getting to go home to their own family? Every driver should be aware not only of themselves but those around them. It will save your life to pay attention to what happens in front of the vehicle, behind the vehicle, beside the vehicle, and inside the vehicle.. The only way to prevent uneducated drivers, is to educate those before they start driving. You have to go to the root of the cause.
Being educated on the signs and traffic light instructions for where you’re going is a key element in getting to your desired destinations. With newer cars having handless access to the driver’s phone, their more tempted to use their phones, than to pay attention to the road. Some phone companies have made setting that sense when you’re driving and mute notifications till you stop. More people should use this setting. No one is the perfect driver, but everyone should try to be a good, respectful and responsible driver.
