How to help prevent car accidents
Driver safety is very important, if a person wants to drive, they need to follow the road laws and be very observant of their surroundings. There are two things that I have seen other people do when they are driving that could potentially lead to a car wreck or even fatalities. One of those being drinking and driving. When a person drinks then drives, they are risking not only their own life but others lives too. Drinking can cause impaired vision and loss of motor skills. I have a personal story about drinking and driving to back this statement up. One year I was at my friend’s house and she was having a party that night. Everyone at the party was drinking and I was too. Later that night there was about six of us left at the party and it was around two am. I was going to bed and my friend woke me up and said, “let’s go for a drive”. I didn’t feel like going for a drive, but I went anyway. She had taken her aunts keys and let her cousin which was fourteen at the time drive. We ended up on this windy road that was steep. On the way down the road the girl that was driving was trying to show off her driving skills and we ended up rolling over in a ditch. All of us ended up in the hospital that night, luckily nobody was fatally injured. This experience has pushed me toward driver safety more. My other example for what not to do while driving is to stay off the phone. Do Not go on the phone while driving, it makes the driver distracted and it can lead to car accidents or injuries too. Always keep your eyes on the road at all times and make sure to be aware of your surroundings. In order to drive safe keep distractions away and if you are tired or drowsy do not drive at all. Make sure to keep up on road safety laws and stay informed of any construction areas that are around. Obey the speed limit especially in school zones “there may be kids around”. Make sure to check if cars are in the lane next to you before switching lanes. If weather conditions are bad for example snow. If it is snowing out make sure to use extreme caution and if you have to go a little bit slower than the speed limit to reduce the chance of an accident. The rain is another weather condition that can cause an accident. While driving in the rain make sure to have your lights on “also in the snow”. Make sure your windshield wipers work efficiently enough for visibility. When it is icy out be aware of black ice or slick spots and study on how to drive if you hit a ice patch in the road. Other than bad weather conditions make sure to pay attention to stop signs, lights, and one-way signs. I have seen the most trouble with these things in big cities where people seem not to care that much.
