2020 Drivers Education Essay

Driver education plays a huge role in preventing and reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving. A few of the countless steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving are to avoid distractions and not only drive for yourself but also drive for those around you in case others are having a hard time staying focused on the road. Another vital step that can be taken is always being mindful of any weather conditions that could affect your driving because they require one to drive slightly differently.

I have been involved in a minor car accident which did send me, my cousin and great grandmother to the hospital. This accident has caused me to, every now and then, have some lower back pains, so it has an impact on me and serves as that constant reminder. However, a more traumatic car accident experience occurred more recently for me when my younger stepbrother was involved in an accident caused by speeding in the rain. Not only was the driver of the vehicle speeding on a curved road in the rain, the boys were not wearing their seatbelts. The recklessness mixed with the poor weather conditions resulted in the car flipping and ejecting my stepbrother out of the window. He spent about four weeks in the hospital, two of which he was in a medically induced coma. While my stepbrother is now home and recovering, our family works a little harder to remind those around us to buckle up and be mindful of who we are riding with and their driving norms. This event took a huge toll on my family and definitely affected the way we all drive, some may call us extra but we call it being safe.

I have many friends who often drive irresponsibly by either speeding, not wearing their seatbelts or simply performing a role and stop at a stop sign. I do not like to feel as if I am nagging, especially around my friends, but when there are lives on the line, I will always correct an irresponsible driver. I do not believe that many people understand how powerful a car is and what kind of impact imprudent driving can have until it either happens to them or someone close to them.

Personally, in order for me to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road I can use what I have experienced and learned to educate those around me. I have 7 younger siblings between my mother and father. Being the older sibling since a very young age, I have always been pushed to be a role model. My siblings mean the world to me and I always feel responsible to protect them. If I simply take the time to constantly remind them to wear their seatbelt, watch their surroundings as they drive and pay close attention to traffic lights and signs, I can slowly make a difference which they will hopefully reciprocate with their friends.
