The Importance of Educating Young Drivers
The Importance of Educating Young Drivers
Attending driving school is one of the most important parts of learning how to drive; not only do prospective drivers learn traffic laws, but they learn how to be safe defensive drivers as well. Defensive driving is anticipating what other drivers near your vehicle may do. Driving instructors stress that you cannot control the other cars around you, so no matter how safely you drive, you can always be impacted by another driver. Having knowledge of how to be a safe defensive driver is an important part of how driving school reduces the number of driving-related injuries and deaths.
Some specific tips driving instructors give to their students include driving with two hands on the wheel, having your mirrors adjusted properly, and looking ahead on the road. All of these suggestions allow drivers to be safer and have reduced chances of dying in an accident. By having two hands on the wheel, drivers have more control over their car and can react quickly to dangerous situations. Drivers can better anticipate a dangerous situation by having their mirrors adjusted properly and by looking at the road to be fully aware of the surrounding traffic. These three tips can help drivers to avoid accidents, reducing their chances of death while driving.
Drivers must always wear a seatbelt to minimize body movement in the case of an accident. Since you cannot control what other vehicles on the road will do, buckling your seatbelt reduces the chance of serious injury or death if you get into an accident. A few years ago, I was a passenger in a car accident, and everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt. Because the driver was paying attention and braked quickly, the collision was low impact and no one sustained any injuries. While it was scary at the time, my experience with being in a crash is not too negative. The result of no one being hurt can be attributed to the driver following simple safety guidelines and driving defensively.
The first step to being a safer driver is to know what being a safe driver means. Knowing the laws, how to drive defensively, and wearing a seatbelt are all important aspects of being a safe driver. It is important for new drivers to learn how best to be defensive drivers and for experienced drivers to continue to be aware of their surroundings and actions. If all drivers were to drive defensively, the number of accidents would be significantly reduced. The accidents that still happened would be less likely to cause serious harm or death.
As a passenger in a vehicle, I can ensure I am not distracting the driver. I can also remind other drivers not to look at their phones while driving. It is easy to become distracted while driving, so a simple reminder from an attentive passenger can be a big help. If drivers and passengers work together, more serious accidents could be avoided.
Educating drivers, as well as passengers, on how to be a safer driver, or passenger, can help avoid serious automobile accidents that lead to severe injury or death.
