Education is the Key

“Education is the Key”

Driver education courses are a major component in reducing the number of driving related deaths. I completed a driver education class and it taught me so many important precautions and rules of the road that my parents omitted. I could not get that type of hands on training through only a book or virtual class. The instructors directly evaluated and corrected my driving which in the long run will reduce the number of driving related deaths for me and most everyone who takes the course.

Another important step to reduce the number of deaths related to driving would be to require high schools to offer driver education classes at a reduced price. Driver education courses are expensive and many schools no longer offer the class. Also, some parents do not have vehicles for teenagers to practice in. The more supervised practice a new driver receives helps to reduce traffic fatalities.

I have not been in a car accident even though I have been driving for the last 2 years around 25 miles to school one way each day. I have witnessed family members texting while driving which really scares me so I always offer to do it for them or remind them about hands free voice controls for their phone.

Steps I take to be a safer driver is to store my cell phone in the arm rest on silent. I also do not ride with a car load of friends so I will not get distracted. I think a great service learning project for high school drivers would be to teach and remind citizens how to use hands free features on their cars and cellphones to reduce distracted driving and driving fatalities.
