Eyes On The Road

Eyes On The Road

According to the NHTSA, there are six million car accidents that occur every year. I’ve always found the term “car accident” to be somewhat of an oxymoron. Was it an accident when you made the choice to drive while having that drink of beer? Was it an accident that you blasted through that stop sign without a care in the world? Was it an accident when you signaled too early? All these hypotheticals I have stated can be catalysts for these car accidents to occur.

One way to avoid accidents like this is to participate in a driver’s education course. Driver’s education courses provide new drivers the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are required for vehicle safety. Some skills you can learn in courses like these are defensive driving, being aware of your surroundings while on the road, and making good decisions on the road. Another reason why driver’s education is important because it provides the students the rules, laws, and regulations on the road while driving. Important to remember the laws to avoid getting into legal trouble.

Luckily, I have never been involved in a car accident or seen any of my friends or family suffer the consequences. Truth be told, I have seen a car accident happen right before my eyes. About 10 years ago, I was in the car with my dad and my brother going to pick up another sibling from school. Suddenly, I see two black cars driving in opposite lanes going in the same direction. One of the drivers seemed reluctant to stay in his or her lane and… BOOM. Both cars collided with each other causing a bit of chaos on the street as drivers stopped in shock. One safe practice that could have occurred to prevent this incident from happening was if both drivers’ had been aware of their surroundings. That means looking at what’s in front of you on the road, having your eyes on the mirrors, looking up top at the mirror on the dashboard, and last but not least, keeping your eyes on the road.

The advice I can give you to be safer on the road is to have good judgement while driving. Look both ways before you drive past the stop sign. Signal when you turn. Know when to press the brakes. Keep your eyes on the road at all times. Performing these habits will help you avoid car accidents that could put you or others in harm’s way.
