Think Before You Do

Think Before You Do

Riley Pirouet – November 7, 2020

I believe that driver education can play a key role in reducing the number of deaths from

driving. In driver’s education, you learn the basic safety of driving and the different ways to

solve problems when you’re on the road. Of course, this training cannot give you every

single scenario possible or help prevent every single crash/death that occurs, but if everyone

took driver education seriously, all drivers would be on the same page for the topics that are

top. Of course, accidents happen, and deaths may still occur, but I believe drivers education

helps and will continue to help decrease the amount of deaths.

To reduce the number of deaths related to driving, drivers should be careful and ensure

not to do anything that distracts them from the driving itself. Examples of distractions

include texting/on the phone, eating, being tired, friends/family, etc. To help reduce the

number or deaths and accidents, I believe removing or limiting these distractions to the best

of everyone’s ability will help reduce the numbers.

I have been in a car with my family members before where I had to make sure they were

following the rules to prevent accidents from occurring. On multiple occasions, I had to

remind my friends and family about the on the phone and driving. People think that it is easy

and they can multitask, but they sometimes forget that one little wrong jerk of the car or one

more second having their eyes on their phone can cause damage and possibly take peoples

lives. Everyone is not perfect, but I think it is important to remind people to follow the road

rules when we see them being broken to help prevent future injuries.

I can work on the distractions that I find myself doing such as being tired when driving,

texting, and eating big meals when driving. I think that if I work on not having to drive when

tired and just wait until I’m more awake if possible or have someone else more awake to

drive instead. Also, I want to work on eating my main meals before or after driving. When

going to school and work, my commute is an hour and usually occurs at prime eating times

like breakfast and dinner. Having to drive at these prime times I find myself eating while

driving which can be dangerous and be a serious distraction. I want to work on either eating

before or when I’m there, leaving myself enough time to make this change. Another thing I

catch myself doing is texting or looking at my phone when driving. I don’t do it constantly

but I do catch myself on rare occasions thinking “it’s just for a quick second”. Even though I

think that, all it takes is a quick second to cause an accident and possibly a life. I think I can

help others be better and safer drivers by pointing out these distractions if I see others doing

them hoping they will do the same to me. If everyone works together, we can make driving a

fun and safe thing to do without as many worries.
