Drunk driving

When under-the-influence, a person loses control over their basic functionality such as their sight, concentration and mobility. Since, driving requires a person to have full consistent use and control over those three aforementioned abilities, driving inebriated serves as a very challenging and dangerous task. In many cases, it can turn fatal.

Driving while intoxicated can lead to fault in many accidents, so it is important to give people the resources they need in order to prevent them. Especially young adults because they are fairly new to the drinking scene.

There are many ways we can spread awareness to newly aged adults and adolescents. One way is by utilizing up- to-date technology. For example, we can send PSA messages through their phones about the consequences of drunk driving. When exposing the effects of drunk driving, the consequences need to be depicted as realistic as possible, whether they are grave or minuscule, in order to stress how serious the matter is. Also, we can post information on social media sites.

The posts can be in any creative and colorful layout, in order to attract followers and generate views, as long as the message is clear and the content is accurate. As a way to accumulate traction to the sites, we can recruit and encourage people with larger followings to repost, shoutout and like all of the content by awarding them incentives.

Another way we can reach them is by targeting the most popular places that they hangout in order to provide them with information pamphlets for prevention and safety regarding under the influence driving. Alongside the pamphlets, we can gift them with merchandise (such as: hats, pins, keychains, bracelets, water bottles, etc…) that promotes driving safety, including the prevention of intoxicated driving.

Next, we can take advantage of advertisement spaces. Instead of creating just a temporary commercial or billboard we could build a whole platform. We could utilise other public events, as well as create our own to share informative tips.

Not only can we spread information, but we can directly teach them how to avoid these situations by providing them with experience. As an example, we could host in-person awareness and prevention meetings. During these meetings, we can have interactive demos or modules where each individual will have a personalized simulated experience with drunk driving in order to see first hand all risks you take by getting behind the wheel and all of the aftermath. We can hold group activities at these meetings as well where each group will form a responsibility and accountability plan for those who plan to drink and those who plan to abstain from drinking. Therefore, people can practice and prepare as though it is a real life situation.

Lastly, in addition to providing experience, I think another effective way of teaching people how to avoid drunk driving situations is by encouraging daily conversations. If these conversations are casually introduced then there would be more healthy dialogues about drinking safety and motor vehicle safety. Constantly talking about these issues with people you know and trust should make you more aware and able to prevent under-the-influence driving.
