IMPLICATIONS OF BEING A UNSAFE DRIVER

.

Unfortunately, my essay is based on personal tragedy which has taught me the importance of safe driving.

The serious implications of being a unsafe driver became a harsh reality to myself and my family in 2003 when my aunt was killed in a car accident and again in 2017 and 2020 when I lost two cousins and two other cousins were left as quadriplegics. Three family members gone and two who will never walk again. All three accidents, in my opinion, could have been prevented using safe driving practices.

Every teenager looks forward to the day they finally get their driver license and be independent but also need to understand that the privilege to drive is a huge responsibility. You not only have to be aware of how you are driving you must also be aware of other people driving around you, obstacles in the road and even the weather. Being focused and aware of your surroundings will better prepare you to handle a situation if it arises. These techniques are taught in the Driver Education course.

It is important that we always utilize safe driving practices. Drivers that engage in unsafe driving practices are something we face when we go out on the roads. Some drivers exhibit dangerous driving habits such as texting while driving which is the leading cause of deaths of teenage drivers. Although we cannot control the unsafe driving of others we can be focused and prepared to hopefully avoid an accident. That is why it is so important to take advantage of the opportunity of Drivers Education where techniques and practices are taught to help you handle a situation if it arises.

One accident can cause many lives to be affected. They are sons, daughters, mothers and fathers. The list is never ending. The consequences can be emotional, financial and life changing. Consequences can range from a fine, points on your license, license suspension, and death. It is imperative that we be prepared and focused and as safe as possible

It is easy to become comfortable and not as aware as we should be when we are driving. We play music, talk with friends and laugh. We always have to remind ourselves that it only takes a split second for something to go wrong and an accident to happen.

I have heard many older adults say “We never had car seats or had to wear a seat belt when we were young and we are ok”. Things change, roads change, speed limits change and I believe that things were not always fine, we just did not hear about it as much because we did not have social media.

In conclusion, there are serious implication to being a driver. The car we are driving can be a deadly weapon and cause death to myself and others. It is of extreme importance that the privilege to drive is taken seriously and every time we get behind the wheel we make the decision to be a safe driver
