The Privilege We Hold

Brigitte Pajares

Irresponsible driving has a fixable problem to the ongoing issue of increasing public safety to protect civilians. Through the integration of driver education and regulations, the world can be a safer place. With a system that instructs new drivers to be fully attentive and consider all possible scenarios as well as laws reprimanding wrongdoings, more drivers will feel encouraged to use their privilege humbly. Ever since I have received my license, I always prioritize the saying “drive on the defensive.” My mother first mentioned it during our practice lessons that I must always be on the lookout and not let my guard down because the lack of communication on the road can lead to devastating consequences. Thankfully no one in my immediate family has suffered a fatal crash but the stories and the news are enough to impact my life. For example, there should be no warnings when it comes to distracted or reckless driving as well as a reward system for those with little to no points on their records to motivate others. I believe to help build a community full of cautious drivers, there has to be continual reminders that receiving a license is a privilege granted by our states because they recognize our ability to focus on the road maintaining the peace on the streets.
