That is the number of motor vehicle fatalities in 2018. Even though that number has declined 1.9% from the year before, it is still not enough. That is why drivers ed is so important. We need current and future drivers to know the rules of the road. Yes, there is a lot of rules and regulations and guidelines while on the road; there is even a whole manual for it! However, all of those signs, lines of the highways, knowing who has the right of way is to help provide a safe journey for you and for everyone else on the road. If everyone were to follow all the rules and regulations, there wouldn’t be so much deaths!
We currently live a society where we can call a car to pick you up, any where you are. It’s called Uber and Lyft! If everyone had some common sense, such as if you are intoxicated or not safe to drive for any reason, please call someone to pick you up. We can prevent a potential accident just by being mindful of our own state. This isn’t just for your life, but maybe saving another one as well. Another way that we can reduce the number of deaths related to driving is to have drivers take the test again.
The written and driving portion? Yes. When some people have been driving for some time now, they lose clarity and get lazy on how to drive safely on the road. So I propose that drivers have to retake their test whenever their drivers license expires. That is a 8 year timespan -from when they get their license to when it expires- before they have to go in and take the test again. The driver probably don’t have to take an exact test, but they need something to remind them on how to drive more properly and how to be safer on the roads.
Luckily I have not been in a fatal car accident, but I have family members and close family friends that have. Seeing the damage done to the car, you think to yourself that that could’ve been my body. It reminds you that all the rules in the driver’s manual is in there for a reason.
It is not that complicated to be a safer driver. Make sure to follow the rules, for example, staying 2 seconds behind any car, stop at the line before the crosswalk, don’t text and drive and etc. Lastly, have confidence in yourself. You are in charge of the vehicle and it is built for you control. Trust in your car. Also, be smart. Don’t go try racing for the yellow light. It isn’t hard to be a safe driver.
