Reaching our safe driving goal

The
amount of deaths each year due to auto-related incidents is high. So
high in fact, that it almost makes you think driving shouldn’t be
allowed to happen in the future. If you just outlaw driving then all
of these yearly deaths would just cease to happen, but this would
also have many negative effects. There are many ways that people can
improve their driving to make it safer, starting back to when you
first learned how to drive. Using these methods we can successfully
reduce the yearly death rate for auto accidents while still allowing
people the privilege to drive.

At
the beginning of anyone’s driving journey comes driver training.
It’s the single most important step to becoming a full-fledged
driver. Drivers training teaches you the rules of the road and how
to safely obey those rules. Along with teaching you the rules, they
teach you what could happen to you if you don’t follow them. Drivers
training could easily put the incentive in your head to be a safe
driver if they put the images of unsafe drivers in there as well.
One of the steps that can be taken to reduce the number of
auto-related accidents, is to initiate harsher punishments on those
that don’t drive safely. Those who do die in auto accidents cannot
face the punishments; however, it can still be a great incentive for
all drivers to drive more safely, hopefully reducing the death toll.

I
have been in an auto accident; it was no one’s fault but my own. On
December 31st, 2019, I was driving to my girlfriend’s house but we
had just had a big snowstorm. I was a confident driver, so I didn’t
think much of it. I got started down the road and was going the
speed limit when I hit a patch of black ice. My car started to go to
the left, so I tried to fix it, but overcorrected and sent my car to
the right. I did this one more time which caused my car to do a 180
and land in a ditch. Miraculously, no one was injured; however, my
car was totaled. I learned that I need to be more cautious and aware
of my surroundings, as well as take the appropriate measures to drive
in whatever conditions are present.

For
people to become better drivers, they need to realize that driving is
a privilege, not a right. Some people think that they don’t need to
obey the laws and that they’ll be fine, but the decision to behave as
such is reckless. In a perfect world where everyone is cautious and
aware of all of the rules of the road, the death toll would cease to
exist. The gap between our reality and our goal is large, but if
everyone does their part and drives carefully, crossing the gap
towards our goal for the future becomes achievable.
