When we’re younger we think learning to drive is a new adventure that we are ready to conquer but we are oblivious to the responsibility and attention required while on the road. Drivers ed brings awareness to the risks and benefits of driving in order to help make new drivers more aware of the caution and dangers they may face even after learning to operate a motor vehicle. By making new drivers sit through hours of lectures, videos, and answering questions, you are drilling in their head knowledge that can be used to save their own life or multiple other lives. In order to reduce the number of deaths related to driving, drivers have to be aware of their surroundings at every given moment while they’re behind the wheel. They should use their turn signal for every lane change or turn even if they do not see other vehicles in order to build strong good habits. Drivers should always make sure that they are buckled up and that there are no unnecessary distractions that will remove their focus from the road. Under no circumstances should a driver be impaired while driving, countless lives will be put at risk so driver’s should be required to have a designated driver with them. I have been driving for a little over a year now. The day before I got into an accident I was praising myself on how I had gone 364 days without getting into any. I was extremely proud of myself. The next day I was headed into work and had to take a detour off the highway due to a major accident. I quickly plugged my job’s address into my GPS in hopes that I would still make it on time. I pulled up in a yellow light and went to turn left as the light was turning red and couldn’t see around the corner. A huge truck had obscured my view of a car waiting at the next red light and I slammed on my brakes as I ran into the back of a car. I was scared so badly I was shaking and couldn’t talk. Thankfully everyone was okay but I called a close friend at work and they told me to take my time getting there and upon arrival they came out and checked out my car and made sure I was fine. No damage had been done to either of our cars or ourselves. I now know that it is more important to take your time going ways you are unfamiliar with than to rush and get into an accident. I take my time when going anywhere now. I also ask that my friends read directions when I need them so my focus is on the road and not reading something else. When driving other people I make sure everyone is buckled and understands that we will get there when we get there, safety comes first.
