In the Driver’s Seat
Drivers ed is the most important part of driving on public roadways. Drivers ed is so important because of the size of the diversity on the road. Public roadways are home to stranded cars, pedestrians, motorcyclists, big rig trucks, emergency personnel, and bicyclists. Understanding the rules of the road both as a pedestrian and a driver is what prevents injury and death because of driving. Drivers ed is essential to driving defensively and reacting appropriately to the conditions of the road.
To reduce the number of deaths related to driving, a new law should pass that requires benchmark testing every three years for all licensed drivers, especially the elderly. By creating this law, states can inform their drivers of any new legislations, regulations, and vehicle recalls. Drivers will also be able to improve their driving skills because of feedback provided after the test. This law will also protect motorists from the natural process of aging. From personal experience, people above their 50’s start losing their sight. Testing every three years will update the state registries on any new restrictions on all their drivers, keeping more people protected from innocent elderly people. Driving causes a lot of death, destruction, and financial ruin due to car accidents. Although driving is so dangerous, many countries’ economies rely on travel for interstate trade, diplomatic communications, and citizen travel. It is a top priority to inform drivers and remove unfit drivers from roadways because all lives matter.
I have been in two accidents. One where someone took an illegal left turn while I was driving through a green light at 45 MPH. My leg was on the brake which resulted in a dislocated toe, a broken tibia, and a shattered fibula. This left me bed ridden for 10 months. My other accident occurred at a right turn with a tow truck. I did not realize how slow they were taking the turn and ran into the back of their truck while reaching for some paperwork on the passenger seat. I totaled my car by ruining the transmission. My mother and stepfather were not good examples as they consistently broke the law when I was younger. My stepfather would drive with open containers, drunk, while my three siblings and I were in the car. After a few DUI’s, my mother resorted to driving without insurance.
To be a better and safer driver I can avoid what my mother and stepfather did. I can also adhere to the laws like driving the speed limit, using the right amount of time to switch lanes, and drive a safe distance behind cars. When people try to be rude and invoke a reaction, it is best to ignore them. Hopefully, they can learn from the example of my reaction.
