When
I was a little girl, I got into a minor car accident with my father.
The other person involved was at fault. They realized that after
shouting some obscenities, which resulted in them apologizing
profusely. This accident was many years ago, so the details are vague
at this point. But, from what I can recall, the other person was
distracted.

Friends
of mine have gotten in severe car accidents for similar reasons, and
I feel so sorry for them.

It
is common knowledge that all types of accidents happen because of
distractions. Car accidents, in particular, are no exception. We can
easily get distracted by a billboard, or a text message, or a
conversation, or anything imaginable. The truth is easier said than
done; don’t get distracted while driving. The most selfish yet
selfless thing to do behind the wheel is to just focus. So much can
be avoided and accomplished just by focusing on the road.

Lack
of education increases deaths when it comes to driving. Living near
Chicago, I’ve heard conversations where people are bragging about
driving without a license, or even a permit. This is a terrible thing
to brag about because knowing the rules of the road is crucial.
Knowing how to drive a car is crucial. Driving is a privilege to be
earned. That license shows the person had patience to learn the rules
of the road, which saves lives.

Prevention
of car accidents is so straightforward, but it is a hard goal to
obtain. Accidents do happen. However, focusing on the road and
following the rules of the road help prevent these accidents. Paying
attention to your surroundings helps prevent these accidents; not
everyone is going to drive safely. Driving sober and with a calm mind
helps prevent these accidents. By following the rules and
acknowledging the precautions, we are becoming better and safer
drives, which helps others do the same.
