Be Aware!

Be alert! Watch out! Driving is a part of most people’s lives, and safe driving saves lives. Drivers ed is important because it informs people about the proper and safe way to drive. It also shows the consequences of being an aggressive driver and not following laws. It also reduces deaths by increasing awareness. The more educated we are, the better equipped we are to do something well and safely. While education is an influential part of reducing driving-related deaths, many more steps can be taken.
If we stress the devastating consequences and create newer technology to avoid drunk and distracted driving, we can reduce the number of deaths that result. Technology such as a patch to detect alcohol in the bloodstream, and for repeat offenders, a breathalyzer test that must be negative to start the engine would be beneficial. As for distractions, some apps sense when you are driving and silence your phone automatically.
Distractions can lead to devastation. I have experienced being in a car accident due to a distracted driver. In October of 2018, my mom and I were in a traumatic car accident. There were three cars involved, and we were not at fault. My mom had many injuries, including a cracked clavicle, dislocated toes, and major bruising from the seatbelt. I had minor injuries with just a sore body and a little bit of bruising. We are both still nervous when coming to a sharp stop in a car.
Even experienced drivers can be distracted. What can be done? I do quite a few things to avoid distracted driving, and I urge others to do the same. First, I don’t eat while driving. While it may be tempting to snack on some pretzels or sip on that fresh smoothie, this is a big distraction. I either eat before I start traveling, or I stop along the way. Second, I avoid loud music. This may cause my mind to wander, and the louder it is, the less aware I am of vehicle noises around me. Third, I make sure my phone is out of reach. I either give it to the passenger, or I place it on the back seat. The phone is a big distraction. When I get a notification, my immediate reaction is to look at my phone. Turning it on silent avoids this possible distraction of taking my eyes off the road. Texting while driving is illegal for a good reason. Texting or checking your phone while driving or even stopped at a light is deceptively distracting.
Last, I do not drive when I am feeling tired. Driving while not fully alert is dangerous. To prevent dozing off, switch drivers, stop and drink caffeine, or even try chewing gum. After our car accident, I am a much more conscientious driver. Distracted driving is a catalyst for a costly accident, and there are ways to avoid it. I encourage everyone to take the necessary precautions, no matter how inconvenient.
