I was born and raised in Arlington, Virginia but one summer my family decided it was best to move to Woodbridge. Which meant almost every weekend we would commute back to Arlington to visit and attend family functions. However, one of the downsides of living in Woodbridge is the heavy traffic. These were mainly caused by construction and car accidents. Although some of the accidents weren’t as severe, others were unbelievable.

A few years back one of my dad’s friends passed away in a car accident. The collision was a result of drunk driving. His car crossed over to the opposite lane and hit another car that was come. The scary part of car accidents is not only how it happens but how easily your world can come crashing down. The gift of life is precious but also fragile. So why would someone give that up?

In high school, you must take a drivers ed class in your junior year. You learn how to properly and safely drive on the road. These classes are very important because it’s the stepping stones to conducting a car and for some, it’s the first time they learn the rules of the road. Also, the course should build student’s confidence to operate a car before getting behind the wheel. Not only that but students will realize how important one’s responsibility or impact is on the road.

However, the learning process never stops. Even after taking the course, you will learn more about how to be safe on the road. For example, the maintenance of a vehicle, and the importance of mental health. Throughout the use of your car, things start to glitch or wear out, so it is up to you to get it checked to avoid problems in the long run. You need to be aware of when you need to change your oil. When you go for your refill also, check your brakes because they play a huge part when driving. Sometimes they can save you from a collision. Not only does your car have to be adequate conditions but so do you. We, humans, have feelings and we have our good and bad days. Sometimes our bad days get the best of us but that is why it’s best to avoid getting on the road. Your mental health is what keeps you and others safe on the road. So, before you drive ask yourself if you are in control.

Lastly, if there is one thing I want you to take out of this, it’s to always wear a seat belt when inside a vehicle. Whether you are driving or not. Even if you get in a car accident that seat belts can the reason why you get to live another day. Also, please don’t use your cellphone. No text message is worth losing a life. While driving you need both eyes and ears to be attentive. So put your phone on silent and keep your eyes on the road.
