How to Stay Safe While Driving

Ignorance and inexperience. These are the main obstacles we encounter, especially when it comes to driving. The importance of drivers ed in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving is simply to inform future drivers as to what they should be looking out for. Before we can get out onto the road we’re given lesson after lesson on the rules of the road and what to expect in order to prepare us to the best of their ability. Of course this can’t prevent every accident that happens, but there’s a great difference between someone with knowledge about driving and someone without it.

The most important steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving is to understand the rules of the road and spread awareness. Making sure you do something as simple as not going over the speed limit makes a great difference. One of the main problems is texting while driving. Informing others of the consequences that their actions may have. Putting it in perspective is a great way to realize this. ‘Would you want me to drive like this while you or your family was on the road’? It’s really about the big picture while driving that keeps people safe.

To make yourself a better and safer driver, on top of helping others become safer on the road, is to drive and gain experience. There’s nothing that keeps drivers safer than experience which allows them to understand their situation quicker and find a solution to keep them safe if they ever find themselves in one. As someone who only had their license for a few months I was pretty confident, now I realise just ignorant, that I wouldn’t get into any crash. Of course, however, I did. Going to pick up a friend, I try turning around, but end up in his fence. Was this a life-threatening occurrence? No way. Was it embarrassing that the fence was less damaged than the car? Absolutely. However, it knocked some sense into me. Almost a year after I can proudly say I haven’t gotten into another accident since then. Without that tiny accident, I probably would’ve gotten into a worse accident due to my inexperience. Not to say go out and get in an accident, but it happens to everyone. The best way you can improve your own driving is to learn from that mistake and make sure it doesn’t happen again.
