Don’t be Hasty, Think Safety
Don’t be Hasty, Think Safety.
Drivers ed teaches youth more than the basics of operating a motorized vehicle. It teaches student’s the safety precautions automobile manufacturers set in their vehicles (examples such as airbags, sensors, crumple zones). Not only that but it teaches different scenarios and how to approach any emergency. From hitting a deer to experiencing a blow out to even handling consequences of vehicle errors (brake failure, steering failure, etc.). These aspects show that drivers ed is important to making society safer and smoother systematically, thus reducing the number of deaths. The first step is to have a stricter rubric for drivers tests. As someone who has taken a driver’s test I must say that it is a very simple test that can be passed without much knowledge from a drivers ed course. It is imperative that the government adds things such as written tests with special scenarios to test how decisive new drivers are in order to make sure they can handle certain scenarios. The second and last step that could be taken is to implement more smart features among cars. Automobile makers are implementing artificial intelligence to make their cars safer not for their financial benefit but for the benefit of the end user. Thankfully I have not had an experience of being in a car accident. I have seen a few of my old friends driving irresponsibly with their vehicles. One of my old friends Jake got a new car for his birthday. This car was a modified 2016 Subaru Wrx Sti. I was on a road going 45mph in my old and safe minivan. Jake passes me going about 80 mph moving and swerving through traffic. Sadly, this is not the first time I have seen recklessness. In my hometown Wheaton, Illinois I was driving home from school. A old man in a Chevrolet Camaro passed by going what I would say was a 100mph on Butterfield Rd which is a 45 zone. The driver lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed into another car causing both vehicles to fall into the ditch. The driver was fine but the person he hit passed away due to the impact. A grave was put there where the crash occurred. The next day the victim’s sister was there at the grave mourning the loss of their loved one. It was tragic and shows how driving irresponsibly can affect others. One step I have found is to switch your insurance. It is an odd step but it works. There are insurance companies that monitor how you drive and will only accept those who drive safely and responsibly. The reward to this is that insurance rates will be lower and you will be safe. Another step to be a better and safer driver is to keep your distance from other cars. I would say it is safe to be three car lengths behind the car in front of you; So in the event the car does a hard brake then you will have enough time to brake or move out of the way.
