Obtaining a driver’s license or drivers permit at any age is a great blessing and achievement but also a huge responsibility. As a current Class A driver, drivers ed is the key to protecting the driver and passenger(s) as well as the other drivers on the roadway. At the end of the day we are all just trying to get home.
The first step in drivers ed should begin way before the vehicle is started. Potential drivers should be aware of how their vehicle is to be maintained prior to take off. As a truck driver we are responsible to preform what is known as a pre-trip inspection of our vehicle. This can be done in a matter of minutes if one knows what to look for. Basic knowledge of tire tread depth, functioning lights, and any leaks can assure the driver that their vehicle is safe for the road.
The second step is to have both hands on the wheel. Doing so give one complete control of the vehicle. This can be helpful incase of an unexpected tire blowout or to safely steer clear of any debris left on the roadway. For proper hand position it is best to position both hands across from each other at either ten and two o’clock or nine and three.
The third and most important step is to remove all distractions once the vehicle is started. Drivers should under no circumstance use electronic devices while driving. If a call or text must be made pull over safely if not it needs to wait. Doing this will protect the driver as well as others from harm. Also being sober should always be strictly enforced for any potential driver. I know first had what it is like to be hit by a drunk driver. I am grateful that no one was severely injured. However, it all could have been averted if the driver of that vehicle called for a ride home and if I were more cautions when taking my turn and waiting a few more seconds after the light turned green.
To conclude drivers ed can save many lives if done properly. Proper knowledge of your vehicle is key before hitting the roadway. Eliminating distractions makes you a safer driver. It also will not hurt to keep both hands on the wheel either ten and two or nine and three.
