Drive Safely
The death rate of car accidents has raised concerns, however, not everyone knows the statistics. Especially young adults, which account for the majority of deaths, are unaware there are more car accident deaths than deaths in war combat. Why is that? Knowledge is power. Similar to knowing not to play with guns, knowing driving safety can ensure all drivers are aware of the dangers their 1.4-ton machine can do.
When I first began to drive I felt “the need for speed” and constantly went fast, believing I could make every turn and not make a mistake. I always had to be reminded and keep in mind to slow down and be cautious of my actions.
My father told me the story of Jamie. His cousin grew up on the farm and a graduating senior was with his friends. They were driving somewhere, but the car was going too fast on the gravel road, and when they turned, the car flipped and rolled. Jamie was killed.
Being eligible for a permit begins at age 15. For a license at age 16. The age to receive these should be increased to 17 and 18 because these people are more likely to be responsible, as well as be more aware of how dangerous cars can be. Education on driving safety should be targeted at the 15 age group since that’s when most are learning to drive. Classes on driving safety should be mandatory for all drivers to receive their license. These classes need to cement the dangers and gruesomeness that can result in an accident, as well as teach how to drive safely in certain road and weather conditions. In my school, there was a yearly video shown of first responders at crash sites; the accidents were gory and disturbing, and surely made an impression on the students. Showing images of sites of major car crashes can give a warning of how reckless driving leads to terrible ends. An alternative to lessen horror would be showing how dummies react in car accidents.
Those at the mercy of drivers must also be cautious to not cause a car accident. Jaywalking occurs too often risking both the driver and pedestrian injury. Traffic laws were created to keep those inside and outside vehicles safe, so they must always be followed. Be utterly sober as all driving safety awareness PSA’s repeat. No drop of alcohol if a person will drive or have one of their friends drive them. No smoking any marijuana or other type of mind-altering drug, classifying them like alcohol. Pedestrians must look both ways when crossing, especially at the driver’s face knowing if they are paying attention. Cyclists should not travel in car lanes because they are not fast enough, endangering them and oncoming traffic. At night, attire is crucial to be spotted by drivers; dark clothing of any kind should not be used and the person must be in full view, reflectors are recommended.
