Safe Driving Prevents Deaths

Safe Driving Prevents Deaths

Drivers ed is a crucial part of the teenager driving experience. Most high schoolers begin driving and taking their road test when they are sixteen, which is under the age of full brain development at the age of twenty-five. The immature brain that is in all teenagers leads to rash decisions that can result in deaths because they made an irresponsible choice, like texting or drinking, that caused a crash. Drivers ed gives new drivers the chance to learn the consequences of dangerous actions before they are put behind the wheel and can help them navigate safe driving that can decrease deaths because they have been taught the safe driving techniques. Other steps that can be taken is to increase the difficulty of the written permit test. Many states require a written permit test before teenagers can drive with their parents, but many are quick and simple with a mere glance at the rules of driving. These tests should be expanded to include the failures to obey driving laws and the statistical outcome of illegal driving practices. Another step to reduce deaths is to require mandatory driving classes taught by professional and licensed instructors. These classes could include a video that highlights testimonies of those who have been involved in accidents and the outcomes with a large pathos appeal that can elicit sadness and awareness from adolescents. I have been in one car accident, but it was a minor one. My neighbor was driving me home from marching band practice, and it was a dark night in September. He had a contraption that held his phone in place while he drove, but his phone fell from the holder, and I tried to put in back into place. But then, it fell again, so he went to pick up the phone as a car came towards us on our neighborhood street, but he did not notice because he was distracted by the drop of his phone. Then, I heard a grinding sound of metal on metal from the passenger side and my neighbor came to an abrupt stop after swerving into a parallel parked car on our street. After the car had stopped, I felt terrified because of the large noise and jolt that had hit the car. We were lucky that we had avoided a head-on collision, but I never take for granted how we were able to exit the vehicle with no injuries. As a new driver, I have taken the experience of the crash to heart. I always put my phone on silent and in a place that I cannot reach it, so it will not distract me. When I drive, I limit all distractions, including minor ones like food and talking because even though they are legal activities, unfocused driving can be caused by their activities. As long as I continue to practice safe driving, I know that I help prevent unwarranted deaths to innocent souls who still have long lives ahead of them.
