Driver’s Essay

What is the importance of drivers ed in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving?

Drivers ed is highly important for reducing driving-related deaths. All of us with a license and the ability to drive are educated in various ways about driving. We may learn how to drive from our parents, peers, or we may even teach ourselves how to drive. Therefore, some varying thoughts and customs exist about driving. A driving attitude or style that may be normal for one may be abnormal for another. Having the proper education ensures that we all know about the advantages and disadvantages of driving and that we all drive with the same respectful mindset about it.

Have I ever had the experience of being in a car accident or seen friends or family members driving irresponsibly?

Thankfully, I never experienced being in a car accident, but I witnessed friends driving irresponsibly. I recall a memory in my freshman year of high school that I was riding in the car of an upperclassman with seven other people. However, her car was tiny and could only fit three people, respectively. We were all laid on top of each other in the car, a literal representation of a clown car. In the passenger seat, two people sat on top of each other. In the back, where I and another person sat, someone sat on top of me and another person on top of the person I was with. And for the kicker, someone else was cradled in the back of the trunk. I remember the fear I had if we got into an accident that would not end well for any of us. Fortunately, our destination was very close, and we did not get into an accident, but that was the last time I would do that.

What steps can I take to become a better driver?

Be a defensive driver on the road, arrive at my destination early so I’m not speeding on the commute, and to set my GPS ahead of time for any place that I’m going that I’m not familiar with.

What steps can be taken to reduce driving-related deaths?

Implement texting fines, provide driving classes at the local DMV, not driving while intoxicated, and stop the need for late-night driving when visibility is at its lowest.
