Being a Safe Driver

Drivers ed

Drivers ed is an important topic to understand so that people take better precautions, not just for others but for themselves too. From the little things of proper grip on a steering wheel, to being attentive on a highway at rush hour, and everything in between are vital to reducing injuries and death on the road. While many people take classes in school and are taught proper education, as time goes on many people tend to either forget or disregard it. Their many years behind the wheel makes them feel as they know what they are doing, even if it may be unsafe.

Reiterating and reinforcing of the rules is the difference between life and death. Practice and implementation of this can drastically reduce the number of driving related deaths. I feel that the introduction of classes every 3-5 years to review the proper driving etiquette would result in a huge decline in accidents behind the wheel. As technology and procedures advance, the way people may have learned to drive may become obsolete as new studies emerge. Having these classes would keep everyone up to date and more comfortable as to what they are doing.

People may not have a full comprehension of how bad it is to drive inattentive until its too late. Probably the biggest hindrance on any driver is their smartphone. I have seen multiple family members and friends, and even myself fall victim to checking his/her device on the road. While being a resourceful device that gives you the internet at your fingertips, for the same reason it is a detrimental distraction to the driver. Taking one’s eyes off the road on even a small, quiet street can result in disastrous consequences.

Luckily, as many others have seen the danger of having a smartphone with them while driving, there are many applications made that can pause any incoming notifications while you are driving. Having these apps on one’s device will focus their eyes on what is most important, whatever lies ahead. Even the simple things of when seeing someone inattentive of their phone or other improper ways of driving, is to correct them so they know for the future.

Driving may seem like an easy task, but it is quite the opposite. It is a machine that we sometimes forget we cannot be lazy while operating. Your mind and body need full attention to properly use it; without it, deadly outcomes are only seconds from happening.
