DWI (Driving while intelligent)

You only get one life, so why risk it? People need to have this mindset when they are driving. I see far to many people risking their lives and the lives of others for dumb reasons. Your number one task at hand when driving, should be to get from point A to point B safely. So picking up your phone or ignoring a speed limit sign should never happen. Would you really be able to live with yourself knowing that you killed someone because you were driving irresponsibly?

One of my friends was a victim of an irresponsible driver, but luckily she survived with only a broken leg. A woman was on her phone and she ran through a red light and T-boned my friend’s car. That lady could’ve killed herself or my friend just because she was driving irresponsibly. This is a prime example of why drivers ed is so important. According to Newsroom, young drivers who have not taken drivers ed are 24% more likely to be involved in a fatal/injury accident. With that being said, if everyone was required to take drivers ed, there would be way less fatal/injury accidents. Drivers ed teaches you way more than just about signs and maintaining speed. They teach you how to be responsible and the dangers of driving. When I was in drivers ed they drilled into our heads that we need to be defensive drivers. While you’re driving you can’t just be fixated on yourself, you have to be aware of everything around you. They teach us to watch out for kids; because they’re unpredictable, to watch out for semi-trucks, and to pay attention to our lines. All those things that drivers ed teaches you may not be in your knowledge if you don’t take drivers ed. Do you know what to do if you’re on the highway and your brakes on your car stop working? I do because they taught me that in drivers ed.

In conclusion, if we want to reduce the number of deaths related to driving we need to make drivers ed apart of school curriculum, so everyone can take it. We also need to make holding phones while driving illegal. That means no changing songs, no texting, and no looking up what time a place closes. The only time a phone should be used is if you have a bluetooth calling system in your car and the call is very important. Phones really should be on silent mode while you’re driving because no notification is more important than your life. This is why when I’m driving I keep my phone on silent mode, and when I’m a passenger in other people’s car, I do their texting and changing of songs for them. I also make sure that I am alert and practicing good driving habits.
