The Necessity of Safety and Driving

In the media, a teenager obtaining their license is an amazing milestone. Having a license represents freedom and the strive for independence. Despite this idea being ingrained in the media, which influences the societal norm, I never prioritize getting a driver’s license. The reason for this was due to the fear of the dangers on the road. So, I attempt to put it off. In the end, I have acquired a learner permit and enrolled in Drivers Ed because I will be leaving for college within a month. But, what caused my negative connotation with driving?

When I was younger, I was in a car accident while my mother was driving, due to another driver’s lack of awareness while pulling into the road. No one was harmed, but the anxiety of the unpredictability of driving has stayed with me. This allowed me to appreciate Drivers Ed because it’s required in the state of Maryland, which is where I live. The education reduces the number in deaths per year due to driving because it helps young and new drivers to further understand the rules of the road from professionals, that even experienced drivers sometimes ignore or not follow. For example, when I practice driving, I mirror how my parents drive. Since I’m more inexperienced, it’s easier to notice the reckless decisions that my parents had taught me, which can put me and other drivers at risk. This includes not completely stopping at a stop sign, turning onto roads at the wrong time, and speeding.

Steps and precautions are needed to keep drivers safe and prevent deaths while on the road. I believe that the age requirement for driving older because drivers would be more mature, which could help with decision making while driving. Another step towards fewer deaths is to prioritize keeping cars up to code. This is significant because if a car isn’t safe to ride in, then when there is the possibility that an accident takes place and it impacts the survival of the driver and others within the car. And, awarding drivers for following the rules of the road may normalize safe driving and avoid deadly occurrences. Personally, I will execute safe driving by wearing my seatbelt and adjusting my seat and mirrors before driving for complete comfort and safety. Also, I will constantly be aware of my surroundings at all times, meaning I will make decisions while driving based on how others are driving. The reason for this is in case of the unexpectedness of others. I hope drivers become more cautious and secure in the future, so I can drive without worry.
