The Road to a Brighter Future

Although driving a car can be a pleasant activity to enjoy, it is also one of the more dangerous activities. In the United States alone, about 34,000 fatal crashes occur annually. That is 34,000 lives consisting of mothers, daughters, fathers, and brothers dying annually. Negligent, absent minded drivers can cause devastation to multiple families across the country, which is why we must educate all drivers. We must decrease this number so that families may remain whole. This decrease can start with education about how many American people die from slip ups from people behind the wheel. The number of deaths in the U.S. resulting from fatal car crashes is more than the death toll resulting from the Korean War. We know how devastating the effects of the Korean War were, as well as the scope of this reality; to think that more people have suffered and died because of car accidents is dismal. If more drivers were aware of this fact, they might consider more often if they should really pick up their phone in traffic or take time and attention to eat while driving.

Another way to reduce these deaths is by really cracking down on drivers who are not paying attention to the road, weather it be looking at their phone or smoking or anything else. If a driver I occupied by anything but driving, they should be pulled over and fined, because if they do not have their full attention on driving, they increase their chances of getting into an accident. Once more people are fined, the public will realize that they should be more careful about what they do while they’re driving, therefore decreasing the number of distracted driver on the road, as well as the number of fatal car crashes across the country.

These steps are imperative to making a safer road for young drivers. My best friend’s sister has been in multiple car accidents to the neglect of the drivers around her, as well as neglect of her own, to abide by road safety rules; she has since then learned the actions she must take in order to be a responsible driver. Fortunately, none of these instances resulted in death, but they had the potential to be disastrous. In order to stop her and others from experiencing more crashes, we must take preventative steps; we must take action; we must be more cognizant of others and respect them on the road. If there are dangerous, reckless drivers around us, we should slow down gradually until they pass us, then continue on our way. If we are running late to an event, we should take our time and obey speed limits in order to avoid an accident. And if there is a storm thundering outside, we should either wait it out or exercise caution and be on the highest alert while driving. These are steps I have already personally taken, and I can only ask the same from my fellow drivers.
