To Be A Better Driver

My name is Oluwaseyitan and I am currently a rising sophomore attending the University of Michigan. I would say that drivers ed is one of the most foundational necessities towards reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving. The reason is because drivers ed gives the student the opportunity to encounter real life-threatening situations from the low risk environment of the classroom. Drivers ed gives the student the opportunity to see and, in many ways, practically understand what puts people most at risk when driving.

When it comes to the steps that could be taken to reduce the number deaths related to driving, I believe that one of the best ways to do this would be by choosing to do a better job enforcing laws that would prevent reckless driving. Even though this does not solve all of the death-due-to-driving problems, it certainly decreases the risk because there is more authoritative involvement managing the issue. I am actually someone who has experienced being in a car crash, and I think that another beneficial step would be to increase the emphasis on other passengers being extra eyes for driver – at least in the event of needing to cross a four-lane road. I believe that in my experience if one of the passengers had mentioned how they had seen the vehicle coming before they had collided with our vehicle that we would have waited and avoided the accident entirely.

The main thing I could do to become a safer driver would be to become more aware of my surroundings at intersections – especially when making left turns. Being more aware would give me the opportunity to notice vehicles that could be putting others in jeopardy due to poor driving. Having already noticed since I was more aware of my surroundings, I now have the adequate time to make the necessary precautions and adjustments to my driving to make sure that I am able to safely cross the road.
