In the Driver’s Seat

According to Verywell Health, car accidents are the number one leading cause of death for teenagers. The lack of experience and wisdom can cloud our better judgment, which can result in tragic accidents. As a teenager it is important for me to try my best to deter from reckless driving behavior. The steps I plan to take in order to be a safer driver is to limit any kind of distracted driving because I value human life. Distracted driving is a selfish act that can put many in danger just because I feel the need to satisfy my own temporary pleasures. Although I have never physically been in a car accident, I have experienced being in the car with a driver who has failed to practice safe driving. I often witness them make the mistake of using their phone while driving, blasting their music or going 15 to 25 mph higher than the given speed limit. To them and other passengers it may feel like a joyous ride but to others around them it is not. I try to be understanding and realize that nobody can be a perfect driver but it is my job as a passenger to ensure that they are driving in a controlled manner. Trying to impress your friends or fit in does not matter nor compare when it comes to someone’s life so it is crucial for you to call your friends out when you recognize irresponsible driving. I will also make it my duty to hold myself accountable when I text and drive or partake in dangerous driving. These actions can help reduce the amount of car related deaths that happen day to day. I would rather be a help to others on the road rather than a safety hazard. Whenever I watch the news and I hear about fatal accidents that could have been avoided it inspires me to become a better driver. All experienced and inexperienced drivers should make it a priority to further educate themselves on defensive and safe driving. With me being a teenage driver, I find it essential to look back at my driver’s license handbook every now and then in order to refresh my mind of the driver safety rules. Every driver should have a drivers handbook because it come with a wide range of information, from physical driving to your driving privileges; the consequences of bad driving behavior. One day that information can help save an innocent person’s life, which is why it is important for me and others to educate ourselves and practice safe driving.
