The Simple Methods Behind Prevention of Catastrophe

The importance of drivers ed in reducing the number of deaths resulting from driving is unmistakable. Prior to the widespread implementation of drivers ed in the 1970’s, there were about six deaths per 100 million Americans a day. However, now, there are only one. This is because drivers ed not only provides the basics of driving, including car maintenance and avoidance tactics to avoid unsafe situations, but it also provides students with proper technique when performing maneuvers such as reversing or performing parallel parking. In many states, it also demands that students pass a final test, resulting in their learner’s permit, which leads to licensure. Prior to drivers ed, Americans were very rarely licensed to drive, and were mainly taught through self-education or being educated from other drivers. Many of the methods they chose to avoid or navigate through unsafe driving situations were often based entirely on their common sense, resulting in much more crashes and resulting deaths.

There are hundreds of steps that can be taken in order to reduce the amount of deaths while driving. However, this essay will only examine the most effective ones. By far, the most effective method of preventing death by driving is learning proper driving techniques, as mentioned above, and assessing whether or not it is safe for driving. As is reiterated countless times by driving instructors, the safest way you can drive is not to drive at all. The second most effective method of preventing death from driving is by wearing a seatbelt. In a study performed in 2014, those who wore seatbelts lessened their chance of both death and serious injury by 50%. This increases in pick-up trucks, where the chances are decreased by 65%. Without a seatbelt, drivers and passengers alike are much more likely to be driven forward by the momentum of the crash, causing catastrophic, life-threatening injuries. In addition, the force of an airbag still has the capacity to kill if the driver or passenger does not wear a seatbelt.

There have been many instances of my father driving irresponsibly. This may stem from the fact that my father is a professional driver, and he often drives alone in a well-built commercial truck, which lessens the responsibility for him to exercise more caution when he drives. However, he is consistently working on exercising more caution when he drives; it especially helps when he drives with the entire family in the car with him.
