Importance of Drivers Ed

The importance of drivers ed in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving, definitely starts with education. Educating youth who are interested in getting their driver’s license is beyond important. Knowing all of the rules of the road can prevent a lot of car accidents, especially fatal ones. Gaining knowledge of the road, being aware of four way stops, using blinkers and stopping at red lights can absolutely save lives. Cracking down on distracted drivers, like the ones who text and talk on the phone, can certainly be step one in reducing deaths related to driving. Secondly, make sure those who drive under the influence are held accountable by possibly serving jail time, and having their license suspended or revoked. Drunk drivers and distracted drivers are a big part of the deaths caused by driving. Once you have been in a car accident and suffered injuries caused by someone who was distracted, takes a toll on you. I was involved in a car accident with my best friend when we were on the way home from a Thanksgiving family gathering. We had a green light and we were T-boned by a girl texting on her phone who ran her red light. Being in that car accident honestly scared me and also frustrated me because I thought to myself, “What is so important on your phone? It can’t wait? Do you not care about your safety and the safety of others?”. Although my best friend lost his car due to damages from the wreck, it was a blessing that we came out of it with minor injuries. I think that there are many things that everyone can do and not just drivers, but passengers also. We can remind our loved ones and friends to wear a seatbelt, make sure they aren’t distracted while driving, make sure they drive for themselves and others on the road.
